Final Senior Sendoff from Parents: Wilnes, from the time we met you, we immediately saw the special boy you were and the big heart you had. We knew we would make you part of our family, even though we weren’t sure how that was going to happen because of the rules of adoption in Haiti at that time. But we stayed hopeful and persistent and 4.5 years later we brought you home. The first thing you wanted, even before an iPhone, was soccer cleats. In Haiti we first watched you play soccer with other kids in an open field with cows, barefoot or in broken crocs, and little water to drink. I remember Dad jumping in the game with you and saying to me later that he had no idea how you all could play in that heat all day. Other times we visited we watched you play on a concrete slab. Any landscape could be turned into a soccer field. We worried a little about you making a team once you arrived in the U.S. We absolutely believed in you.
Our worry was because we knew most of these kids had been playing school or club soccer their whole lives, and a 15 year old who had only played pick-up games in pastures might not be able to acclimate or compete in the same way. But you did it. You worked hard. And no matter where you go in life, always take that determination with you. Remember how important it is to stay devoted to the people and things that matter most and fight for yourself and the people you love. We are so proud of you, Wines, and feel blessed to be your parents. We know your Haitian family would be so proud too. We love you!
